The very concept of ‘liveness’ emerged only with the evolution of recording and the rise of radio as a medium. How could audiences possibly distinguish between recorded and unrecorded content? To demarcate one from the other new terminology came into being.

Aneta Mancewicz is a scholar at Royal Holloway/ University of London
Her academic research focuses on digital media in performance, Shakespearean staging, and European theatre. From 2016 to 2019, she was a co-dramaturgian at CREW and published her findings in ‘Hamlet after Deconstruction’
