Danteum

“In 1938, Giuseppe Terragni and Pietro Lingeri designed the Danteum, an unbuilt monument dedicated to 14th-century Italian writer Dante Alighieri structured around the formal divisions of The Divine Comedy. The work never came to fruition for personal and political reasons. Nowadays, just some sketches, scraps of an architectural model of the project, and pieces of a project report remain.”

Giusy Caruso and Isjtar collaborate on the Danteum project, an XR performance that blends contemporary and classical music with virtual architecture in VR.
Playing piano in VR poses several problems, as does moving around in a structure, larger than the VR area. Giusy and Isjtar explored several artistic and technical solutions, layering tactile and mixed reality elements over the VR environment and using movement of the public and performer to dynamically reconstruct the space.

The workshop took place at the Royal Conservatoire of Antwerp.
